The Institute of the Lithuanian Language has been working on terminology since 1941, when the Section of Practical Language and Terminology was established at the Institute. In 1951, the Terminology Commission, which has been set up under the auspices of the Presidium of the Academy of Sciences in 1945, was transferred to the Institute of the Lithuanian Language (the Institute of the Lithuanian Language and Literature in 1952–1990). In 1971, the Terminology Group was established within the Dictionaries Sector of the Institute of the Lithuanian Language and Literature. The Department of Language Culture and Terminology was founded in 1989. Since 1991, the Institute of the Lithuanian Language has had its separate Terminology Department, which became the Terminology Centre in 2003.
The goals of the Terminology Centre are to conduct research of Lithuanian terminology and terminography and analyse the functioning of Lithuanian terms from different fields amidst the public.
- To achieve the above goals, the Terminology Centre pursues the objectives of:
- researching theoretical problems of modern Lithuanian terminology and terminography;
- analysing the history of Lithuanian terminology and researching the development of Lithuanian terms from different fields;
- establishing the principles of Lithuanian terminology and terminography;
- submitting recommendations on matters of terminology, terminography, and scientific language.
