The Lithuanian Hearth has been established in 2006. It is the only interactive Lithuanian language museum in Lithuania.
The aim of The Lithuanian Hearth is to provide the public with the latest linguistic knowledge in an appealing and a contemporary manner, including the usage of specialised linguistic toys and games; to educate on the topical issues of language usage; to strengthen the prestige of the Lithuanian language; to inspire pupils to nurture and admire their language or motivate them as prospective researchers; to promote the Lithuanian language as a partner in the dialogue of European multilingualism and cultures.
Goals:
-
to promote the latest linguistic knowledge;
-
to encourage an interest in the Lithuanian language as one of the most significant factors contributing to national identity and citizenship;
-
to promote European ideas on multilingualism and intercultural dialogue.
In the expositions of The Lithuanian Hearth you can find a variety of documents, books and linguists’ artefacts relevant to our language. What makes the museum exceptional are the unique language toys it offers. The guests of the exposition will get to discover that the language is not limited to its’ formal rules, rather, they will get to experience it as a vibrant and a fascinating phenomenon which is open to creativity, playfulness and even physical touch!
During the educational programmes, the visitors of The Lithuanian Hearth get acquainted with an interactive exhibition, the expositions of the museum are presented, the achievements of Lithuanian linguistics and its’ history are introduced; children are given the opportunity to familiarise themselves with linguistic facts, encouraging their curiosity regarding Lithuanian language and linguistic research.
Groups of participants can schedule educational programmes. The museum also hosts various educational activities, organises national competitions for calligraphy, dictionary writing, and creative expression such as “What is the Lithuanian Language to Me”.
The visitors of The Lithuanian Hearth are not limited to Lithuanian schoolchildren – it is also a host to university students, more senior students from the Medard Čobots Third Age University and international guests (including Germany, Belgium, Denmark, Poland, Italy, USA and Ukraine).
