I. FRICATIVES AND AFFRICATES

Summary

The writings of the seventeenth century Lithuania Minor bear witness to significant shifts in orthography. The change was never labelled an orthographical “reform,” either in contemporary or in later grammar books, but the scale of change permits us to adopt that particular term. The orthography was modified in a conscious and organized manner, which was attested to by a political impulse (document Recessus generalis, 1639), by philological codification (grammars and manuscript dictionaries of Danielius Kleinas in 1653, 1654, and of Kristupas Sapūnas, Teofilis Šulcas in 1673), and by the universal acceptance of the changes proposed (salient peculiarities of orthography were transformed within a brief span of time and throughout the majority of known texts; in addition, there is no surviving evidence of contemporary alternative models or polemics).

The following differences are the most conspicuous between the “old” and the “new” orthographies: spelling of fricative consonants [ʃ], [ʒ], affricates [ʧ], [ʤ], and nasal vowels [ĩ], [ũ]; marking both quantity (‹y› symbol, and geminates), and quality of the vowels (making a difference between the open [ɛ] and close [e] vowel in script); also denoting word accents and morphological forms (attempts at the homoform distinction).

This research was based on the texts of the sixteenth and seventeenth century Lithuania Minor that were digitized at the Institute of the Lithuanian Language in Vilnius (part of the texts are available at: www.lki.lt/seniejirastai). Precise data that we obtained enabled us to have a broader overview of the tendencies in orthographical development and its chronology. This article deals merely with the spellings of fricative consonants [ʃ], [ʒ], and affricates [ʧ], [ʤ].

Almost a hundred years after the times of Martynas Mažvydas (ca. 1520–1563) the fricative [ʃ] was marked by ‹sch›, and [ʒ] – by a digraph ‹sz› (very seldom: ‹sź› or ‹ź›). A ducal order printed in 1641 did not contain the ‹sch› anymore, and the ligature ‹sz› signified the fricative [ʃ] instead of [ʒ]. The grapheme ‹ź› was selected for [ʒ] (the letter ‹ź› was introduced as early as 1600 by Simonas Vaišnoras [ca. 1545–1600], but he used it only in the word-initial position, while continuing to use ‹sz› [ʒ] in all other positions). In three oath texts of 1644 the ligature ‹sz› signified both [ʃ] and [ʒ] – this must have been the time of transition between the “old” and the “new” orthography. Since the time of Kleinas’s grammars (1653–1654) the system of ‹sz› [ʃ], and ‹ź› [ʒ] gets firmly rooted (in some texts also ‹ś› [ʃ] along with ‹sz› [ʃ]).

The affricate [ʧ] was marked in three different ways in Lithuania Minor. Before 1625 the digraph ‹cz› dominated, and some used ‹tz› instead. In the Hymnal of Jonas Rėza (1625), in the ducal order of 1639, and in Lėmanas’s salutation of 1643 a correlation became obvious: ‹cz› took the word-initial position, and ‹tz›—all other positions. In the ducal order of 1641 return to the mere digraph ‹cz› occurred. Sapūnas and Šulcas were the only ones to systematically employ ‹cź› with a diacritical mark over the second component. In 1653 (maybe even somewhat earlier) a new single letter ‹ć› for the palatal consonant [ʧʲ] was introduced, and it was used along with the digraph ‹cz› that continued to mark the non-palatal [ʧ].

The oldest way to mark the affricate [ʤ] was the digraph ‹dz›. In 1600 Vaišnoras perceived the affricate quite originally, as a combination of consonants [d] and [ʧ], so he was the only one to mark the affricate [ʤ] as ‹dcz› (in other books there were merely a few spontaneous occurrences of ‹dcz›). Since Kleinas’s grammar of 1653 the marking of ‹dź› with the diacritical mark on the second component was established (later in some publications the old ‹dz› was still printed).

The most important role of inculcating the orthographical changes was played by Danielius Kleinas, whose grammars (1653 and 1654) codified the new orthography, and both his Hymnal and his Prayer book were effectively spreading it. There is no way of telling what was the original orthography used in the first version of Sapūnas’s grammar (about 1643). Certain pivotal orthographical changes are obvious in the ducal order of 1641—way before the publication of Kleinas’s grammars, therefore we cannot claim Kleinas was the initiator of the reform. There is no doubt, however, that Kleinas was one of its most significant implementers..

Ona Aleknavičienė

WAR MARTYNAS MAŽVYDAS (MARTINUS MOSVIDIUS) BISCHOF?

Zusammenfassung

In der vorliegenden Studie wird die Verwendung der Bezeichnung vyskupas ‘Bischof’ im preußisch-litauischen Schrifttum vom 16. bis zur Mitte des 18. It is most probable that the earliest surviving Lithuanian lines in Simonas Daukantas’s (1793–1864) hand were inscribed in 1827 in Rīga (Latvia) in his manuscript Excerptsfrom Books (Išrašai iš knįgų [IK]; Library of the Institute for the Lithuanian Literature and Folklore [LLTIB], Vilnius: f. 1 – SD 31). Another almost contemporary manuscript titled Lithuanian Songs (Canticula Lithuanica [DaCL]; National Lithuanian Martynas Mažvydas’s Library, Vilnius: f. 110 – 21) originated in about 1827–1828. These two manuscripts contain quite similar orthography that Daukantas was exploiting in Vilnius (until the end of 1825) and later in Rīga (1826–1827). Its salient features were: (1) the letter ‹y› to denote close vowel [ẹ] of Northwestern Lithuanian Lowland dialect; the digraph ‹yi› to denote [ẹi]; (2) the grapheme ‹e‑› in word-initial position both in conjuncture ir ‘and’ and in preposition iš ‘from’ (as well as in the prefix iš‑); (3) the diacritical non-palatal ‹ł› [l]; (4) the absence of geminates; (5) the avoidance of all diacritics (except for the traditional “Polish” letters ‹ł›, and ‹ż›).

2. The next (third) known Daukantas’s manuscript book with Lithuanian inscriptions—Excerpts from Books of Ethnography and History (Išrašai iš knįgų apie etnografje ir istorje [IKEI], LLTIB: f. 1 – SD 40) is dated approximately in 1828. This IKEI included many modifications in Daukantas’s Vilnius orthography. Certain signs of change had already appeared in DaCL in about 1827–1828 (diacritical ‹‑ę›, ‹ů›), but the most conspicuous changes were introduced merely in IKEI in 1828: (1) in many endings Daukantas chose ‹ę› [ẹ] instead of former ‹y›; (2) the digraph ‹ei› replaced ‹yi›; (3) the diacritical ‹ů› was introduced instead of ‹ou› and ‹ow›; (4) in certain cases Daukantas adopted diacritical ‹ô› [uo] instead of former plain ‹o›; (5) he introduced a new diacritical ‹‑ù› in the instr. sg. m. ending; (6) he instituted geminates (double consonant letters ‹ll, tt, ss›; (7) Daukantas initiated verb infinitives with the final ‹‑te› instead of the former ‹‑ty›. This way the modifications in Daukantas’s individual spelling in 1827–1828 were very substantial: they touched upon multiple particularities of his orthographic habits.

3. Daukantas was educated in Lithuania, so his earliest known Vilnius orthography was conforming to certain spelling practices particular to contemporary Lithuania (especially those that were used for the texts in his native Lithuanian Lowland dialect). In his new Rīga orthography from 1827–1828 on Daukantas switched to the system that to a significant degree followed the Lithuanian orthography of East Prussia.

4. Not all of the contemporary Lithuanian texts of East Prussia contained all the features that Daukantas decided to transform in 1827–1828. The majority of his modifications comply with the first edition of notorious poem by Kristijonas Donelaitis Seasons (Das Jahr inVier Gesaengen; Metai), edited and published by the professor of Königsberg University Liudvikas Rėza in 1818. The most salient feature that made Daukantas’s resolve of change possible were frequent past participles (part. praet. act. nom. pl. m.) in Donelaitis’s poem with the ending ‹‑ę›; they must have inspired Daukantas to introduce the same grapheme in his simple past tense verb endings instead: the two forms in Daukantas dialect were quite confusing, often homophonic.

5. One more source that might have had a certain impact on Daukantas’s orthographical metamorphoses was the Grammatica Litvanica by Danielius Kleinas (1653). Daukantas copied most of this grammar book in his own hand for his personal use. Daukantas’s diacritical ‹ô› might have undergone the direct influence of Kleinas’s Grammatica Litvanica (along with Donelaitis’s Seasons).

6. Daukantas implemented his modifications gradually. Daukantas started from ‹‑ę, ů› in DaCL, and only after he grew accustomed to them, Daukantas introduced more novelties in IKEI: ‹‑û, ô, ‑ù›, and geminates; simultaneously he relinquished the diacritical mark of ‹ł›.

7. In his orthographical transformation Daukantas attempted to keep in his own Lowland Lithuanian dialectal features (East Prussian Lithuanian texts were rendered in a significantly distinct Western Highland dialect). In 7 different endings containing the grapheme ‹ę› Daukantas coded the Lowland sound [ẹ], which was entirely absent from the Western Highland dialect. Lowland Lithuanian phonetics has to be reconstructed for the following Daukantas’s diacritical letters: ‹ô› (Lowland [uo], in Daukantas’s words—“oa”), ‹‑û› (in certain cases Lowland [un], in Daukantas’s words—“indistinct un”), and ‹‑ù› (Lowland [ọ], in Daukantas’s words—pronounced “in husky voice”). Daukantas borrowed the graphic appearance of the Eastern Prussian Lithuanian texts but adjusted it to his own Lowland pronunciation.

8. In 1828, in addition, independently from the East Prussian Lithuanian tradition Daukantas introduced ‹e› in the Lowland diphthong [ẹi], rendering ‹ei›; the same ‹e› he chose for infinitives in ‹‑te›. In both cases Daukantas tried to represent his Lowland pronunciation. On the other hand, Daukantas abandoned ‹e› representing Lowland [ẹ] in some cases of word-initial position—er, esz, and ‹esz‑› were turned into ir, isz, and ‹isz‑›.

9. In sum, in about 1827–1828 Daukantas proceeded in aborting his Vilnius orthography and modelling a new one, Rīga writing system, to a substantial extent based on Donelaitis’spoem 1818 edition, on Kleinas’s 1653 grammar, and on other Lithuanian texts of East Prussia. In 1828 Daukantas was among the very first, who attempted a (partial) merger of EastPrussian Lithuanian orthography with that of Lithuania proper.

10. Enthusiasm for significant changes in orthography could have been partially encouraged by Daukantas’s change in cultural milieu: from mostly Polish speaking Vilnius to predominantly German Rīga. In addition, almost simultaneously a project to introduce a lectureship of Lithuanian at Vilnius University was proposed to the Ministry of Education in Saint Petersburg. This might have become an uplifting impulse for brushing up ones spellings. The two authorities of Donelaitis and Rėza must have helped Daukantas set his mind on their orthography in particular.

Jurgita Venckienė

ANTANAS BARANAUSKAS’S MODEL OF STANDARD LITHUANIAN:

ACCEPTANCE IN SAMOGITIAN THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY

IN KAUNAS

Summary

On December 31, 1870, Motiejus Valančius appointed Antanas Baranauskas to teach homiletics—the theory and practice of preaching in Lithuanian in The Samogitian Theological Seminary in Kaunas. During the first two years seminary students were being prepared for the homiletics course—they were taught the Lithuanian language and later studied the art of preaching. Seminary students came from various places of Kaunas province, so Baranauskas had to find a way to teach various-dialects-speaking seminarians the Lithuanian language. To that purpose, he created a unique model of standard written Lithuanian.

This research was intended to uncover what contemporaries were thinking about Baranauskas’s standard language, in particular—how his immediate environment—The Samogitian Theological Seminary and Diocese Center—accepted or rejected Baranauskas’s standard language theory.

According to Juozas Tumas-Vaižgantas, the seminarians disapproved Baranauskas’s standard language theory. But letters of some of them (of Marcijonas Jurgaitis and Juozapas Žebrys) prove that to at least a part of seminarians the model of Baranauskas’s standard language was not only the object of study, but also seemed very appropriate for everyday written communication.

Later some of Baranauskas’s students applied his standard written Lithuanian in the publication of books (Juozapas Lideikis, Žebrys, Antanas Karosas). Only in the last decade of the nineteenth century, when the language model of periodicals came into force, Baranauskas’s standard language lost its attractiveness, his followers were abandoning certain of features.

Still, in 1881 and later, the translations of the letters of Pope Leo XIII, as well as bishop Mečislovas Paliulionis’s pastoral letters in Lithuanian were written in accordance with the principles of Baranauskas standard language. Baranauskas’s written standard model retained status of the official language in Samogitian Bishop Paliulionis’s office until 1908.

Daiva Sinkevičiūtė, Veslava Račickaja

LITHUANIAN PERSONAL NAMES ORIGINATING

FROM COMPOUND NAMES AND THEIR SPELLING

PECULIARITIES IN THE 1661–1795 LIST OF VILNIUS’S

NEW CITIZENS AND WARRANTORS

Summary

The researched corpus of personal names originating from compound names makes it obvious that part of them were inherited names of the city of Vilnius and its environs. The names of warrantors found in the 1661–1795 list allow us to supplement the Vilnius region stem list with the stems gint-, lo-, sy-, uo-, and žad-.

The derivational structure of recurring names remained stable for the same individuals, i.e. a person was always inscribed with the same suffix or without it, no matter how often the name was repeated. The structure of the second component of most compound names was also steady: some of them lacked a suffix, whereas others were mostly used with the unchanged patronymic suffixes. In the names of patronymic origin the suffixes borrowed from Slavic languages were dominant: in 33 out of 35 names, the most common being ‑owicz.

The vowels, diphthongs, and consonants in the stems of compound names were spelled in typical Polish orthography of Lithuania. The most common vowels /a/, /o/, /u/ and /i/ were quite regularly written with the graphemes ‹o›, ‹a›, ‹u› and ‹i›. The spelling of diphthongs and consonants varied more than that of the vowels. The most frequent consonants (except for /r/, /g/ and /m/ that were spelled uniformly) were consistently written with more typical graphemes for the Polish orthography in Lithuania (variation of /ž/, /s/ and /š/, variation of ‹l› and ‹ł›, occurrence of /n/ as rare ‹ń›).

The spelling variation in less common vowels turned out to be twofold: some variants occurred in rewriting the names, others underwent influence of the first component of diphthongs. The diphthongs /au/ and /ai/ were graphically monophthongized as ‹a› or ‹o›, apparently via copying the vowel graphemes from another stem. Some consonant variants appeared due to Latin orthography (/k/ written as ‹c›, /v/ as ‹v›), whereas reasons for other variants remain unclear (/b/ written as ‹p›, /d/ as ‹t›). Some spelling inconsistencies are to be noted too (/t/ written as ‹tt›, /l/ as ‹łł›). The variation of /j/ spelling as ‹i› and ‹j› must have reflected the tradition of printed texts to not differentiate between capital ‹I› and capital ‹J› (until the beginning of the eighteenth century).

The less common variations in consonant spelling allow us to differently interpret some compound name stems researched by Zinkevičius. Marking of /b/ as ‹p› and /d/ as ‹t› in the names of Vilnius and its environs makes it unnecessary to distinguish the stems par– (Dauparas), part– (Liupartas) and vit– (Sirvytas). The manuscript of the register was received from Jonas Jablonskis by the Lithuanian Science Society in 1913, and presently is preserved in the library of the Institute for the Lithuanian Literature and Folklore in Vilnius (LLTIB). The author of the register has not been identified yet.

The manuscript was written in Polish and Latin, several inserts printed later in Russian were added later. It comprises app. 45,000–60,000 historical proper names (mostly personal names); the number includes also recurring onymes.

This abundance of onymes was collected from various primary sources. For instance, a certain part of Lithuanian proper names was copied from the register confessions in Taujėnai church.
