We invite you to listen to the lecture “Toponyms of Slavic origin in North-East Bavaria: Where they come from, and when and how they got Germanized” by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Harald Hubert Bichlmeier
On June 18 at 9 a.m., a lecture “Toponyms of Slavic origin in North-East Bavaria: Where they come from, and when and how they got Germanized” by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Harald Hubert Bichlmeier, chief researcher at The Research Centre of Baltic Languages and Onomastics, will be held in the library of The Institute of the Lithuanian Language.
In North-Eastern Bavaria, hundreds of toponyms and hydronyms are of Slavic origin. Their Slavic origin has been widely acknowledged over the last century, but in the last decade, attempts have been made to strip dozens of toponyms of their Slavic etymologies. The talk offers several examples of toponyms, which have been deprived of their Slavic origin without justification. Moreover, it will be shown what we can say about the date of the transition of these Slavic toponyms into German and what happened when in the course of their Germanization.
We kindly invite you to participate!
