KONSTANTINO SIRVYDO ŽODYNAI – RANKRAŠTINĖS VOKIEČIŲ–LIETUVIŲ LEKSIKOGRAFIJOS ŠALTINIS. PROBLEMOS IR JŲ SPRENDIMO GALIMYBĖS
Santrauka

THE ATTRIBUTION OF THE MANUSCRIPT SOURCE LITAUISCHE SPRICHWÖRTER UND RÄTSEL
Summary

The article analyzes the issues of the authorship, dating, and localization of the manuscript collection of proverbs and riddles Litauische Sprichwörter und Rätsel (PR) that up to now was being labeled as “anonymous.” This manuscript source is kept in the Vrublevskis Library of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences (Call Number: F 137 – 1). The analysis of its paper watermarks revealed that the manuscript was not from the 17th century as was assumed so far. The latest year of manufacturing one kind of the paper that was used for the manuscript was 1716. Thus, the manuscript must have been written in or after 1716. The unfinished manuscript was not prepared for publishing. It did not survive in its entirety too.

The author of this article claims that the manuscript was in effect compiled by Trempai (District of Darkiemis) precentor Jokūbas Brodovskis (Jacob Brodowski, 1692–1744). The analysis of his longhand in his manuscript dictionary Lexicon Germanico-Lithvanicvm et Lithvanico-Germanicvm (B) and PR leads to the conclusion that PR is the autograph of Brodovskis, obviously produced in Trempai.

Another person, who made some inscriptions in the manuscript, is Gotfrydas Ostermejeris (Gottfried Ostermeyer, 1716–1800). In 1744, after the death of Brodovskis, Ostermejeris arrived at the parish of Trempai and took over the position of precentor (in 1752–1800 he worked as a priest there). There are 16 German and 11 Lithuanian phrases (53 words or 61 word forms) that were inscribed by Ostermejeris in PR. He also corrected 5 words inscribed by Brodovskis.

Most of Ostermejeris’ inscriptions are written above Brodovskis’ text, and together they form the macrostructure of the collection. Eight Lithuanian folklore items of PR were not mentioned in B, therefore, they should be attributed to Ostermejeris and not to Brodovskis. Seven of those Lithuanian items were registered for the first time ever.

AN UNKNOWN COPY OF A 19TH CENTURY HYMNAL: POSSIBILITIES OF IDENTIFICATION
Summary

In 2010, in the National Library of Bavaria in Munich, a copy of the Lithuanian hymnal Iß naujo pérweiʒdẽtos pagérintos Gieſmjû=Knygos (Revised and Improved Hymnal; MhG) was discovered, which was not noticed by the compilers of the national Lithuanian bibliography so far. This is a hymnal in a very typical format (in 12°) for Lithuania Minor; up to now this shape of the book is called “siaurikė” (narrow [book]) by the local Lithuanians.

Munich’s copy is in quite good shape; only a page of the German preface and a page from the middle of the Lithuanian preface are missing. The Lithuanian preface is not signed. The hymnal consists of two parts (616 pp.) plus a prayer book bound together with consecutive pagination (all in all 791 pp.). The year of printing is not given, according to the usual practice in the 19th century. The year of publication is also absent from the catalog of the National Library of Bavaria; it contains only the presupposition that the book might have been printed about 1830.

We can assume the approximate time of publication by the longhand inscription on the front pastedown page: “Giesmu Knigos ira Barbes Megalle iſz Kiauleikiu Weinam Diewui ant Garbes – 1834” (The hymnal belongs to Barbe Magalle from Kiauleikiai; Glory to God alone – 1834). Thus, the hymnal must have been printed before or in 1834.

It is known that the first edition of Carl Gotthard Kebers’ hymnal was published in 1832 in two formats: wide (in 8°) and narrow (in 12°; the latter edition is known only from the secondary sources). The printer Georg Friedrich Hartung has attested that the typeforms of the 1832 edition were not dismantled; thus, the edition of 1836 must have been very similar to that of 1832. Analysis of the orthographical features has confirmed that Munich’s copy of the hymnal is closest to the tentative 1836 edition (which was produced using the old quires). Therefore it is highly probable that MhG is a representative of a so far unknown edition of 1832 (otherwise we would have to assume about one more edition of 1833 or 1834, which is not mentioned in any sources at all).

THE AUTHORSHIP PROBLEM OF УКИШКАСИС КАЛЕНД ОРЮС 1902 МЕТАМС (‘FARMERS’ CALENDAR FOR 1902’) AND OF ALEKSANDR PUSHKIN’S ПАСАКА АПЕ ЖУВИНИКА ИР ЖУВЕЛЕ (‘TALE OF A FISHERMAN AND A LITTLE FISH’)
Summary

The article deals with the linguistic and orthographic issues of two 1902 Lithuanian texts in Cyrillic (Укишкасис календорюс 1902 метамс [‘Farmers’ Calendar for 1902’; УК] and Aleksandr Pushkin’s Пасака апе жувиника ир жувеле [‘Tale of a Fisherman and a Little Fish’; ПаЖЖ]). Various bibliographical sources refer to Juozas Grabauskas as the author of these two publications. However, contradicting accounts, especially regarding the authorship of ПаЖЖ, suggest that there might have been two different authors involved. This hypothesis was tested in the article.Orthographical analysis revealed that the texts were prepared using different models of Lithuanian Cyrillic. This implies that there were two separate individuals who transcribed (prepared) these texts in Lithuanian Cyrillic. Both authors modified the Russian Cyrillic alphabet; the modifications, however, were different: the author of УК introduced the graphemes ‹é› for [e̤·] and ‹j› for [j], while the author of ПаЖЖ used graphemes ‹ў› and ‹у̊›, and marked the sound [j] with the grapheme ‹i›.

The language of both texts was strongly influenced by the norms of the developing Standard Lithuanian, more specifically by the norms of Литовская грамматика (‘Lithuanian Grammar’; ЛГ), which was published in Russian in 1891 and was widely used in most of the Suvalkai province schools of the time. The linguistic analysis of УК revealed that some of the linguistic features used in the text do not correspond to the native dialect of Grabauskas. However, these linguistic differences may be explained by the influence of ЛГ. Thus, there is no serious linguistic evidence to reject (and to prove sufficiently) that the author of this book was Grabauskas. On the other hand, it is still possible that УК was prepared by an unknown person, and Grabauskas only transliterated it from the Latin script into the Cyrillic. This may explain linguistic differences between УК and ПаЖЖ (the latter seems to be translated by him).

The comparison of certain linguistic features observed in ПаЖЖ and in Pranas Vaičaitis (who is sometimes referred to as the translator of ПаЖЖ) texts revealed that there is no linguistic evidence to support Vaičaitis’ authorship. On the other hand, the analysis of ПаЖЖ suggests that the translator of Pushkin’s tale must have been from that dialect area that stretches east from Plutiškės (the native village of Grabauskas). Therefore, it is very likely that ПаЖЖ was translated by Grabauskas. Orthographical analysis, however, indicates that the text was transliterated into Cyrillic by somebody else.

LITHUANIAN BANGINIS ‘WHALE’ ON THE WAVES OF OUR WRITINGS
Summary

As in some other languages, the Lithuanian name for the sea mammal Balaena is related to the mysterious animal that is referred to in the Bible (Hebr. tannīn, Gk. κῆτοςLat. cetus).

Both the mysterious biblical animal and (later) concrete mammal Balaena had been translated in quite different ways in 16–17th century Lithuanian texts. The difference between the texts of Lithuania Major and Lithuania Minor in naming the animal was obvious from the 17th century on: in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania the loan-translation from Slavic didė žuvis, didžuvė, -is, etc. ‘a huge fish’ was popular, and in the texts of Eastern Prussia the word eršketras was initially used (really, the term for another huge fish, selachian [Acipenser sturio]), and later, from the 18th century on, the term bangos žuvis gained acceptance there. This combination of the two words was substituted for a compound bangžuvė, bangžuvis.

The denomination bangos žuvis occurred for the first time in the edition of Psalms (1625) by Jonas Rėza. It was a specific translation from German Walfisch (or Wallfisch); the first segment was mistakenly associated with the similar Germ. wallen ‘to wave’, Wall ‘waving’. The reason for such a connection may have been either folk etymology or individual pseudoetymology (conscious pun). The author of this specific loan-translation might have been either Kristupas Sapūnas or Jonas Rėza.

The contemporary Standard Lithuanian term banginis was used for the first time in the translations of 1905: (a) Polius Ber[t]as, Dievo galybė (God’s Might) and (b) Vladislovas Krakovskis, Naujoji Zelandija (New Zealand). This neologism was recreated either from bangžuvė, bangžuvis (the association with ‘fish’ was rejected) or from another neologism banguolis (in case it is proved that it was used prior to 1905). The word banginis with the suffix -inis fits well with the analogous derivatives and matches the system of Standard Lithuanian well. It is highly probable that the author could have been Jonas Jablonskis.

Hypothetically, one can assume that the neologism banguolis that was occasionally used by Jurgis Šlapelis, Antanas Lalis, and later by Jurgis Elisonas and Jonas Baronas, was introduced prior to banginis; but because of Jablonskis’ authority it was not accepted.

BALTŲ KALBŲ MORFOLOGIJA
Santrauka
