PUBLICATION IN PREPARATION

„Lietuvos vietovardžių žodynas“ (“The Dictionary of Lithuanian Place Names”) is the etymological dictionary of current place names written from the living language. Place names are presented in the standard Lithuanian language, i. e. with standardized phonetics (the standard form of pronunciation is not the dialectal one) and the system of stressing. The dictionary is written in the nested-alphabetical principle, which means that the analyzed place names are grouped into “nests” that are listed in alphabetical order by the first (main) place name in the nest. Place names of different composition but of the same origin are listed in one nest. The place names in the dictionary nests contain the most important data related to them, recorded in the Catalogue of Lithuanian Place Names Written from the Living Language. Each dictionary entry presents the following: first, the place name(s) that is (are) followed by the objects it (they) name; second, the localization (spread) of the place name(s) is indicated; third, an interpretation of the origin.

Currently, Volume IV of the Dictionary of Lithuanian Place Names is being written.
